Let’s talk about SOAP.

I’ve had some questions about if bar soap works as well as liquid soaps against COVID-19.

The short answer is 100% YES.

For those who want to know more, here’s why:
All soap whether it is handmade, foaming, liquid, bar, or natural has a particular molecular makeup that consists of soap molecules. Soap molecules are created during a chemical reaction called saponification, which occurs when a lye solution is mixed with fat (aka plant based oils like olive, etc). After the reaction is complete these little soap molecules posses both hydrophobic (water averse) and hydrophilic (water attracting) properties. When they meet water the hydrophilic parts point out like little arrows and are able to dissolve fatty substances and lipids.

COVID-19 is a virus encased inside of a lipid envelope. Soap (of any kind) is able to dissolve the protective fatty lipid coating around the virus - making it less likely to survive. This combined with the flowing action of water while washing your hands removes the virus from your skin completely, by washing the naked virus down the drain to die a timely death. (Also the reason soap is more effective than hand sanitizer!) All soaps do this. Ours just smells good, is great for sensitive skin + the environment, leaves your hands soft, and buying from Bodhi supports small business. Win, win, win, win, win.

In respect to antibacterial soap > bar soap. COVID-19 is a virus, not a bacteria. Antibacterial soap kills bacteria, not viruses. It will not give you extra protection against this foe. I do have soaps with antibacterial properties due to the plants that I incorporate. But this is a subject for another time.

Stay safe, wash your hands, and keep your head up beeb! I love seeing what you’re up to during this Home time. Keep tagging me so I don’t get lonely! Sending you soap bubbles with love 💕 Let me know if you have any other Q’s!
